Amazon.com Review Like all best friends, George and Martha do everything together--go to the movies, play at the beach, and just hang around not doing much of anything. No matter that they happen to be gigantic hippopotami, they learn the same lessons humans do about the ups and downs of true friendship. George and Martha teach each other (and adoring readers) that even in a close friendship, privacy is important, practical jokes can sometimes backfire, and among other things, pouring split pea soup into your loafers to spare the chef's feelings is not the best laid plan. What's remarkable about the stories in this wonderful collection is the emotion James Marshall infuses into his understated, charming text and illustrations. Each brief tale is always humorous, never preachy, and his drawings--deceptively simple in appearance--are guaranteed to spark feelings of empathy, delight, and self-recognition. Maurice Sendak, in his foreword to this 25th anniversary compilation edition of all 35 stories, notes, "Those dear, ditzy, down-to-earth hippos bring serious pleasure to everybody, not only to children. They are time-capsule hippos who will always remind us of a paradise in publishing and--both seriously and comically--of the true, durable meaning of friendship under the best and worst conditions." (Ages 4 and up)

Like all best friends, George and Martha do everything together—go to the movies, play at the beach, and just hang around not doing much of anything. George and Martha teach each other (and adoring readers) that even in a close friendship, privacy is important, practical jokes can sometimes backfire, and among other things, pouring split pea soup into your loafers to spare the chef’s feelings is not the best-laid plan. A man with a talent for friendship, James Marshall defined its very essence in his stories about the world’s two best friends. In this volume, all thirty-five episodes are brought together to celebrate friendship and two of the most lovable characters ever created. Each of these brief tales is filled with humor, and James Marshall’s drawings are guaranteed to spark feelings of empathy, delight, and self-recognition.
This collector’s edition includes an introduction by MauriceSendak as well as appreciations by some of the top authorsand illustrators working in children’s publishing today. It is a true testament to James Marshall as an author, as an artist, and as a person that his work and his life inspired such a diverse and immensely talented group. Noted children’s book historian Anita Silvey provides an afterword.

George and Martha January 24, 2010 Dee A. Grothe I received the George and Martha book promptly and in good condition. I would recommed this seller.
One of our absolute favorites December 15, 2009 Busy Mama (California) We've bought many copies of this George and Martha collection, and given them away to friends and family. My children, ages almost 4, 6 and 8 years old, just LOVE this book. James Marshall, with just a few pen strokes, and with just a few simple sentences, has conveyed exactly what each hippo is feeling during each scene. The George and Martha stories remind me of the Frog and Toad books (James Marshall was actually good friends with Arnold Lobel), except with a wry sense of humor. Personally, I don't really care for some of James Marshall's other books, namely the Miss Nelson books. In my opinion, the George and Martha books are his best work. Each story makes my kids (and their parents) giggle, or even laugh out loud. It's hard to read just a little of this book. The stories are short, and one has to resist the temptation to read the whole book in one sitting. Such a great pick-me-up when you're having a rough day with the little ones. Just set them all down and start reading this book. Guaranteed to transform the bad attitudes into silliness before you finish the first story. ;-)
My favorite story: The Diary. I can particularly relate to this tale, since my older sister used to read my diary without my permission, then tease me mercilessly about its contents. When I gave a copy of this book to one of her children a few years ago, I dedicated "The Diary" story to her.
This is a great coffee table book/conversation piece too.... Friends can't resist picking it up and, once they do, they're hooked.
Brilliant! November 24, 2009 K. Onyett (Midwest, USA) Not much to add - just an echo of all the other George and Martha lovers. Simple, funny and so engaging. My 6 year old daughter can read almost entirely on her own and my nine year old son is jealous and always has to come check out the illustration. Gotta love George's gold tooth too. The closing editorial speaks of how Marshall was a master of writing so that children had plenty of room for their own imaginations ... "George didn't say a word." Just wanted to add another 5 star to the tally. Enjoy.
Wonderful stories, great deal, must have for kids lit. collection October 31, 2009 P. Costello I am prejudiced about Marshall. I, like many other parents and like other children's writers, think that Marshall is absolutely superb. His drawings dawn on you in their significance after many readings, his prose, after only one.
If I were to write a book that portrayed boys and girls on equal footing, and I wanted to show them both how to take account of one another honestly, I would have written about George and Martha.
This edition has all of the stories, and it is a bargain price compared with buying each paperback book individually. It makes a great holiday or birthday gift. We have already given four away to friends, and everyone says how much they love reading them (over and over) to their children.
What I can't understand is why people seem never to have heard of George and Martha. They've been around for more than 30 years, and I remember receiving my first copy back when Jimmy Carter was president and Reading Is Fundamental instituted its programs in the libraries. If only we spent as much money giving George and Martha to children these days...they might start to like reading again.
Must-have children's book May 26, 2009 K. Magowan This is one of the two or three children's books I buy for all my friends having babies-- an essential classic for the shelf. George and Martha are two hippo best friends with distinctive, idiosyncratic personality traits: Martha is vain, curious to a fault, a little reckless (she won't wear her sunscreen), nosy,a bit bossy, stubborn; George is greedy, gluttonous, talks a big game, a little cowardly, likes playing practical jokes, and is just as nosy (he keeps trying to sneak peeks into Martha's diary). Like any best friends, these two get on each others' nerves, humor each other, look after each other. Marshall is always funny and winning, but George and Martha are Marshall's masterpiece creations. The beauty of this book is it collects all seven G & M books (plus there's a sweet and funny foreword by Marshall's own great friend Maurice Sendak). This book is a terrific present for kids (our three year old loves George and Martha), but also a great gift for an adult-- especially, naturally, for a best friend.
