Product Description
Great friends aren't hard to find--they're right here! We are delighted to provide another offering of James Marshall's George and Martha stories in the reader format. Using original art and text from Marshall's storybooks, the tales have been reformatted to the traditional 6 x 9 trim. Marshall's themes are all resonant with a reader age child--navigating the waters of first friendships, honesty versus kindness, curiosity versus privacy.

This book contains the classic "The Fibber," "The Experiment," and "The Picnic" stories.

2 out of 5 stars Only three stories included -- missing two!   April 23, 2010
Karen Stern
We were totally disappointed by this purchase -- George and Martha Rise and Shine is one of James Marshall's best. However, what a disappointment to discover that (inexplicably) two of the stories that we've come to love after checking this book out of the library numerous times are not included in this new edition. How about a complete version, please???

5 out of 5 stars James Marshall--What Children's Authors Ought To Aspire To Be   October 31, 2009
P. Costello
James Marshall rightly deserves a place in immortality. If he cannot garner it, then George and Martha will. They are friends, and they show children what it means to be friends, in the real world. And they have foibles--Martha is at times intelligent, devious, heartless, and sensitive. George is effervescent, manipulative, faithful, and passionate. Together, these two share an incredibly powerful life across fifty or so very short, very compact tales.

To judge of Marshall's greatness, it is necessary that the reader understand what Marshall is not saying, and how he is not saying it, as much as what he does say. This is the way to teach children--by implication, absence, and sparing wit. Marhsall is a champion jumper, and he is definitely one that we take on picnics.

There is a reason why Sendak, Carle, and others see Marshall's work as important. Please read it...often.

5 out of 5 stars A fine set of tales   July 23, 2009
Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
RISE AND SHINE tell of best friends who have more fun adventures, in three short tales. THE FIBBER tells of George's attempts to impress Martha with some lies; THE EXPERIMENT tells of Martha's possible science gone awry, and THE PICNIC tells of two very different interests in a day off. Can the two friends compromise their different styles? A fine set of tales is perfect for chapter book early readers.

2 out of 5 stars SEVERAL BAD JOKES W/ ILLUSTRATIONS   July 15, 2006

THIS BOOK JUST SEEMS LIKE A JOKE BOOK & IT'S NOT FUNNY. I WAS EXTREMELY DISSAPOINTED, ESPECIALLY AFTER ALL THE GLOWING REVIEWS. 'THE TIGER WHO CAME TO TEA' OR 'I AM NOT SLEEPY & WILL NOT GO TO BED' ARE SO MUCH BETTER- TRY ONE OF THEM INSTEAD.

5 out of 5 stars Hippos Show the Way   February 28, 2001

This is just one in a fabulous series of books featuring George and Martha, the hippo equivalent of Nick and Nora Charles. Their light banter and misunderstandings set the stage for imaginative, humorous resolutions. The hippos' warmth and obviously mutual friendship is evident throughout. There are five stories in its 47 pages, with big simple pictures adorning every other page. A great book for early and late toddlers up to around age five or so.
