| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Review McElligot's Pool is a Seuss classic from the distant era before even The Cat In The Hat. It's a single poetic variation on the theme of adult skepticism that's no match for childhood faith and daydreaming. A small boy is fishing in the tiny, unpromising McElligot's Pool, a puddle that (as a passing farmer informs our diminutive hero) is nothing but a hole where people dispose of their junk. But the boy is all optimism: what if the pool is deeper than anyone thinks? What if it connects to an underground stream that flows under the town to the sea? Might not all sorts of fish then swim up the stream and be caught here? "I might catch an eel... (Well, I might. It depends.) A long twisting eel with a lot of strange bends. And, oddly enough, with a head at both ends!" The moral of the story is straightforward: "If I wait long enough, if I'm patient and cool,/ Who knows what I'll catch in McElligot's pool?" (Ages 4 to 8) --Richard Farr
Product Description Illus. in color. Who knows what fantastic fish might swim in McElligot's Pool!

Changed a 4-year old's outlook June 1, 2010 J. D. Haynes (Maryland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I initially rejected this, my first book from the public library at age 4, because of the cruelty of the barbed fish-hook on the cover. My father said that I should reconsider and not judge a book by its cover (indeed, inside the book no fish-hook hurts a fish). He added the related proverb, "all that glitters is not gold." His message was that I needed to look beyond appearances. That was similar to two themes from that first book - imagining adventures beyond what was immediately seen and faithfully pursuing your visions in the face of discouragement from "realists." These three interlocking themes continue in my life 61 years later. Recently I purchased a copy of "McElligot's Pool" and read it to my adult son who then read it to my father. Highly recommended.

I purchased the book from amazon on the 3rd of September. Its now the 14th of october, still no book. On the 12th I sent a complaint to A-1, they issued a refund, end of story. no attempt to line me up with the another book. Thanks for nothing.

Classic Dr. Suess July 31, 2008 M. Susan Murphey (Northern California, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a classic Dr. Suess book from my childhood. I have read it over and over again to my kids, and now I am reading it to my grandchildren. This book ranks right up there with The Cat in the Hat for entertainment value, for some reason it was a Dr. Suess book that wasn't as well known. Thank goodness my grandmother was a librarian and sent it to me for my 5th birthday. Your kids will LOVE this book, and adults actually enjoy reading it, too!
Wonderful Story I had somehow missed May 16, 2008 Weekend Handyman (Franklin, TN United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thought I knew all the Dr. Seuss books, but this one came to my attention recently and I had never heard of it before. I bought it immediately in order to read it to my youngest daughter before she outgrows children's books. She loved the story and I had one more wonderful message to give her from Dr. Seuss, "Keep thinking of all the wonderful things that are possible!"
